Technology Development and Transfer

LMRC continues to develop new ideas to improve the light metals industry.  A prime example is the TORBED reactor for smelting cell gas scrubbing.  During 1990-1991, extensive pilot trials were carried out by LMRC, and by 1995, thirteen 6m TORBED reactors had been installed.  This technology delivered the best standard in the world. 
 
Currently, several patented technologies are being developed and tested by LMRC.  We are seeking interested clients and development partners for large scale implementation and commercialisation. Opportunities currently exist for the following technologies:

• Retrofittable sidewall Shell Heat Exchangers to cool side shells and recover heat.
• Integrated Potline Control and Improvement System to optimise decision-making within the aluminium supply chain.  
• Smelter Human Interface System (SHI)  to improve decision-making or smelter operations, reduce variation and energy consumption. LMRC has developed the SHI system to do just this, and it is now ready for live smelter trials.
