Customised Industry Training Programmes for Aluminium Smelters
We offer industry training programmes, tailor made to fit the staff profile and individual needs of smelters. Course timing, duration, venue and the requirements of the course participants are agreed with the client before the commencement of training. Training covers technology for the carbon plant, aluminium reduction, and metal casthouse operations, as well as focusing on raw materials, fundamentals of the reduction process, energy balance, anode manufacture and performance, fluoride emission, potline monitoring and control, casthouse alloying process, direct chill casting and other solidification technology as well as heat treatment. LMRC offers four levels of training, ranging from short-courses on smelting basics through to full post-graduate qualifications:
- Level 1 - Basics of smelting and anode manufacturer for operation personnel
- Level 2 - Advanced operational and technical training for carbon, reduction and casthouse staff
- Level 3: The University of Auckland Post Graduate Certificate in light metals reduction technology
- Level 4 : Masters' training and PhD programmes
In most cases, individuals do not complete all four levels; the higher University degrees are recommended only for a select number of candidates. For a master’s degree by project or thesis, the student must obtain approval from an academic supervisor prior to registration, and sponsorship should be provided by the client. PhD study is recommended only for exceptional students who already have relevant academic qualifications and are interested in undertaking a research career path. Our onsite training team can assist smelter managers to identify suitable employees and make recommendations as to the training programmes that would best benefit individual employees and help them achieve their full technical potential.
Industry-sponsored Scholarship Programme
LMRC provides education collaboration through industry-sponsored PhD research projects either on a full time or part-time basis for a period of 3-4 years. English proficiency is required and is tested before enrolment in a PhD programme. We also provide short-term (3-6 month) in-house training for overseas clients.
