The Centre was founded in 2002 to meet global needs for a dedicated single-site light metals research, development and training facility.
Acting as a one-stop-shop for the sector, the Centre's team includes world leaders in their fields of expertise who can draw on substantial experience and knowledge both in academic research and in management of smelters and of major site upgrades. Because they span all relevant disciplines, the Centre's team can focus on a range of client issues in the context of solving business problems.

Currently working on research for clients in Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, China, Dubai, Germany, Netherlands, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Russia and USA, the Centre has continued to expand since its formation and further major international cooperative agreements are underway.
International Consulting
Currently more than 20 world leading aluminium smelters and international research institutes from South America, North America, UAE, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Norway, China, India are in regular contact with our Centre for R&D expertise and assistance, and the number of collaborated partners is growing rapidly.
New Zealand Industry Development
The Centre has also provided the linkage between TechNZ, NZTE wth the Light Alloy Manufacturing New Zealand Incorporated Society (LAM-NZ), aiming at developing an effective business strategy for exporting high value niche products to global markets. Facilities
The Resources and equipment available at the Centre include furnaces to 1200 C and associated dc power for emulating a reduction cell; monitoring equipment for potroom environmental analysis; IR interferometer; specimen surface area analysis; SEM, AFM, XPS etc.
Training and Postgraduate Courses
In addition to meeting industry needs, the Centre is committed to increase understanding of the basic science underpinning the sector's activities, and to contribute the reduction of energy usage and environmental impact. The Centre provides postgraduates industry training, and hosts junior and senior visiting scientists and engineers who work alongside our team on specific projects.
