After graduation in 1971 from the University of Waterloo (Canada) with a Chemical Engineering degree, "Mitch" joined Alcan at the Kitimat smelter as process engineer working on a variety of improvement projects. After being transferred to the Arvida smelter, he was made responsible for the operation of the HS cell development centre serving all of Alcan's Quebec smelters. From there, he joined the Arvida R&D Centre in 1981 as operations manager charged with carrying out the technical program and for the operation and performance characterisation of Alcan's APEX high amperage (300+ kA) experimental cells. The latter part of his career was spent as R&D Program Director with Alcan International. In that role, he was responsible for the definition and deployment of Alcan's Reduction R & D program and later, for the implementation of a Reduction technology scanning (competitive intelligence) function within Alcan.
