Postgraduate and Industry Training Programmes
In co-operation with the Centre for Electrochemical and Minerals Processing at the University of New South Wales, the Light Metals Research Centre offers a Certificate and a post-graduate Diploma in Aluminium Smelting Process Technology.
Courses available are:
- Graduate Certificate in Aluminium Smelting Technology
- Graduate Diploma in Aluminium Smelting Technology
These courses are currently offered at the University of New South Wales, but in 2004 will be offered by the Light Metals Research Centre at The University of Auckland.
Both qualifications include a three week intensive course (plus an additional two weeks for the Diploma) that is partly residential and includes visits to operating smelters for workshop discussions and practical examples of topics being taught.
Candidates may obtain only one of these two (Certificate or Diploma) qualifications and upgrading to the higher level Diploma must be done prior to completing the Certificate qualification.
The Certificate requires 24 Units of Credit (four subjects each of 6 Credits), and the Diploma requires 36 credits to be satisfactorily completed.
Courses will be delivered by both academic lecturers and industry specialists. Individual courses can also be taken as non-award subjects.
Graduate Certificate in Aluminium Smelting Technology
Entry into the Certificate programme requires completion of a relevant undergraduate degree or approved industry experience.
The subject content for the Certificate Course is made up of four courses specially geared for the aluminium industry, namely:
- The Aluminium Industry
- Electrochemical Engineering
- Process Operation and Materials Requirements
- Selection as detailed below
Graduate Diploma in Aluminium Smelting Technology
Suitably qualified Candidates may apply for direct entry into the Diploma in Smelting Technology Programme. Alternatively, it is possible to upgrade from the Certificate Programme, as indicated above.
There are several ways of completing the requirements of the Diploma after satisfactorily completing the four courses described above. The first is to complete two more advanced courses that are also geared for the aluminium industry. These courses can be provided in regional sites or, intensively, in June/July or November/December each year. Alternatively, some of the courses will be available for Distance Learning, which, by effective use of the Internet and emails, provides an opportunity for those unable to attend for the second part.
With approval of the course organiser, it may be possible for one of the two courses to be selected from approved subjects offered at your local Tertiary Institute. Alternatively, you can nominate project and risk management, organisation for quality improvements, advanced occupational health and safety management, operations research and systems evaluation. The Diploma would normally include a minor project that is linked more closely with your individual work function.
