Transforming the Future of Aluminium Smelting
EnPot was developed and patented by a team of researchers and engineers from the Light Metals Research Centre, Yunca Engineering, and Energia Potior Ltd, and is considered one of the most important breakthroughs in aluminium smelting in 125 years.
This technology is a purpose-designed aluminium reduction cell heat exchanger system for increasing smelter flexibility, efficiency and profitability. It offers a dynamic control of the cell heat loss and balance, and provide a step change in control over production and power input requirements. EnPot Transforms aluminium potline operations by opening the operating amperage design window by:
- Allowing greater flexibility to confidently change the operating state quickly and efficiently.
- Enabling response to market changes for both the short and long term.
EnPot gives smelter operators the ability to turn energy consumption up or down to take advantage of off-peak power prices, as well as accommodating the intermittency associated with renewable power supply. It also means production can be better matched to supply and demand. This technology creates flexibility by using the two modes:
INSULATING MODE - When power demand and price is high, or electricity generation is low, EnPot can be used in an insulating mode to decrease energy usage below the usual design window and optimise profitability.
COOLING MODE - When power demand and price is low, or electricity generation is high, EnPot can be used in a cooling mode to increase amperage above the usual design window, to maximise production and profitability.
The change in the operating state can be made on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly basis, thus allowing full flexibility over any changes in market conditions, be it short or long term.
Opening the Energy Use Window
|Currently, the energy input of a smelter cannot be varied by much more than plus or minus 5%, meaning a smelter essentially operates at full capacity 24/7, 365 days a year, for its entire lifespan. This has a significant effect on the cost of production for individual smelters, and also creates power supply issues for national grids seeking to generate a higher percentage of their electricity from renewable sources. EnPot gives smelter operators the ability to turn energy consumption up or down by
as much as 30% to take advantage of off-peak power prices, as well as accommodating the intermittency associated with renewable power supply. It also means production can be better matched to supply and demand.
